E-Prescribing Adoption: A Prescription for Progress

 |

Peter Banks, andErica Galvez

Think about the last time you were prescribed a medication. Did your doctor fill out a prescription on a paper pad and instruct you to get the medication filled at your local pharmacy? If not, chances are that he or she electronically routed the prescription to your pharmacy. This process—called electronic prescribing or “e-prescribing”—is helping prescribers and pharmacists make better clinical decisions, improve workflow, reduce costs, and ultimately enhance patient care.

E-prescribing Adoption: Where We Are Today

The nation has witnessed a significant increase in e-prescribing adoption over the last several years. Surescrip

Microfluidic chip to quickly diagnose the flu

During the H1N1 flu pandemic of 2009, which spread across more than 200 countries and killed more than 18,000 people, it became clear that flu diagnosis was often taking too long and resulting in frequent false negatives.

Today, researchers from Boston University, Harvard, and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center are reporting in the journal PLoS ONE that they have built a microfluidic chip that rivals in accuracy the gold-standard diagnostic test known as RT-PCR but is faster, cheaper, and disposable.

For their four-year study, which involved 146 patients with flu-like symptoms and was funded by the National Institutes of Health, researchers essentially miniaturized the RT-PCR test into a chip the size of a standard microscope slide and analyzed two types of nasal specimens as accurately as the lab-scale method.

“We wanted to show that our technique was feasible on real-world samples,” Catherine Klapperich, an associate professor who led the study, said in a news release.

Senator Mitch McConnell Thinks Pot Kills – Time for a #RealityCheck

No, that is not a quote from 1936s Reefer Madness, it came from the mouth of current Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and it happened in 2012.

Prohibitionist arguments have always been quite laughable, the government originally warned of the dangers of reefer addicted jazz musicians and immigrants corrupting our youth and harming women. However, weve come a long way since the 1930s and the fact that a high ranking elected official in the 21st century can say something so blatantly untrue with a straight face is disturbing at best. Centuries worth of use and countless volumes of research prove Senator McConnells statement to be nothing more than lies and scaremongering. Perhaps the good Senator should do some research of his own, if he did hed find that inhaled cannabis has been shown safe and effective in trials using FDAs own gold standard method.

@Team_Mitch: Centuries of use and decades of research say youre wrong.
