Getting Started with Exercise and Physical Fitness
Exercise is fun for the young who are in good health. Physical fitness for them is easy and effortless. Becoming physically fit can be a difficult and punishing task when one is out of shape. The key to physical fitness for the out-of-shape individuals is to approach exercise and work-outs very gradually.
Physical Fitness Requires Time and Patience
To achieve fitness one must compensate with patience what he/she lacks in physical stamina. If one proceeds too quickly or too impatiently, then exercise can become “a cruel and an unusual punishment”. Chances of of failure would then rise. It takes time for the body to make the necessary physiological and biochemical adjustments that improve stamina, strength and endurance so that one can engage in prolonged and rigorous activities.
The drum-beat that “exercise is fun” can lead to discouragement when one discovers that exercise is hard work and that hard work is rarely fun. One can think of a thousand ways of having fun instead of struggling on the treadmill. For example, eating a doughnut or watching a good movie can be more exciting. When one’s expectations are not met he/she tends to lose interest. Loss of interest and discouragement can lead to failure. Therefore it is very important to dismiss the idea of fun when starting an exercise program for physical fitness.
One should exercise to achieve physical fitness and good health. This is a worthy objective that should be pursued even if it requires hard work and significant amounts of time. A glimpse at a few benefits of physical fitness makes it clear that investment in fitness is a sound investment for good health. Type 2 diabetes, most heart diseases and obesity are examples of diseases and conditions that can be wiped out by physical fitness [1,2,3,4]. Additionally, frailty and morbidity would became issues of marginal concerns.
Intensity of the Exercise Protocol
The intensity of an exercise routine is another source of confusion for most people who are starting an exercise program. There are programs which suggest that benefits from an exercise program can be achieved only if one performs at a certain level of intensity. A person who is trying to get in shape should not be derailed or discouraged by the recommendations and comments from these programs. Instead, he/she should proceed gradually, steadily and patiently until fitness is achieved.
Frequency and Duration of the Exercise Protocol
For the beginner, the frequency of engagement in exercise is more important than the duration or the intensity of the activity. The increase in frequency of activity is an effective introductory strategy to physical fitness because it helps the individual to develop the habit of exercising, so that exercise and fitness will eventually become an integral part of one’s life style.
