How to Get Motivated to Run

Running is a popular form of exercise, and very effective at strengthening the heart, sculpting and toning muscles, and burning fat. But even experienced runners know that it can be difficult to lace up those sneakers and get out the door (or into the gym) for a good run. Having the energy and motivation to run isn’t always easy. Here are some tips for improving motivation to run.

Use a Heart Monitor

A heart monitor straps around your chest and calculates your heart rate. By determining what range your heart rate should be in during a run, you’ll be able to figure out how long you can run without burning out too quickly.

A proper heart rate is very important in running and other aerobic activities. Running below the ideal heart rate means that the body won’t work hard enough to burn fat. Running above the ideal heart rate can lead to chest pains, injury, and becoming fatigued much too quickly. Running at the right heart rate level should make it a more enjoyable and healthful experience overall.

Change the Running Route

Boredom is a prime enemy of motivation. To make your run a bit more interesting, consider running in the opposite direction from where you usually go. Run an extra block. Run at a different time of the day. Making these changes will stimulate and engage your mind more.

Of course, these tips aren’t possible on a treadmill. Treadmill runners might consider switching to an indoor track, or setting up a television in front of a home treadmill. There are many DVDs available that provide a virtual running route, which can be played even while the runner is staying in place.

Buy New Running Clothes

New running clothes will not increase your speed or endurance, but they can be very effective at getting you on the trail or the treadmill, if for no other reason than to show off your fashionable duds. And there’s no need to buy skimpy little shorts or skintight tops, either. Many brands make attractive athletic clothes that provide good body coverage.

Of course, a good pair of running shoes is an absolute must. Cheap shoes can cause injuries, so don’t scrimp in this area. Women also need to invest in a good sports bra that will support them adequately.

Make a Running Mix

Music can be an excellent motivator. Compile some of your favorite tunes (fast, loud music in the rock or pop categories are great choices for running), grab your iPod or MP3 player on your way out the door, and you’ll be set.

Running is a rewarding form of exercise, both physically and emotionally. Use these tips, and look for other ways to make your personal run more enjoyable, and running can become an effective and pleasant part of your lifestyle.
